Cocklebury Farm is home to many grey herons. They can often be spotted flying overhead with their slow flapping wings or standing as still as a statues by our ponds. ðŠķ
Although we definitely welcome our feathered friends at our farm, we’ve had to install a “heron defence system” on our pond in an effort to try and protect our pond life – which make yummy snacks that the herons like to treat themselves to!
In the Spring, newts return to the water from the land for breeding season. They prefer to breed in still water without any fish, so our ponds are ideal for them!ðĶ
During this time, putting in extra little defence system can simply ensure we protect the future generations of our pond life.
This of course doesn’t harm the herons and they still have plenty of other options for food. In fact, you are very likely to spot them by the canal keeping their eye out for their next meal! ð
