Leaving our grass long is just one of the many ways we encourage and support wildlife here at Cocklebury Farm! We let our haylage fields grow naturally before cutting them in early July. This allows wildflowers to bloom and scatter their seeds ready to continue the natural cycle year after year.
Dandelions are often considered a garden weed but are in fact an important wildflower for early pollinators such as bees and butterflies – they also blanket the farm in a beautiful yellow and Odin likes to pose with them!
These increasingly rare meadow spaces are the perfect protective microclimate for a wide variety of insects, birds, and small mammals.
Before the fields are cut, they are walked to ensure any nesting animals have the chance to relocate safely!
